Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision.
Of course, you want someone who takes great photographs. But you also want someone you can get along with, someone who understands how important the day is to you, and someone who won't make you feel uncomfortable every time a camera is pointed in your direction.
That's something I've always felt is just as important as the photography itself.
I'm Michael Dillon, the photographer behind Dillon Photography. I'm based in Galway and photograph weddings throughout Ireland. My approach is relaxed and unobtrusive, with a focus on capturing the real moments of the day while also creating beautiful, timeless photographs that you'll enjoy looking back on for years to come.
A wedding day moves quickly.
There are so many things happening that you simply can't be everywhere at once. You might be talking to one group of friends while something funny is happening across the room, or spending time with your family while a completely different moment is unfolding outside.
That's one of the things I enjoy most about wedding photography – being there to notice those moments.
The laughter, the nerves before the ceremony, the reactions when the couple first see each other, friends catching up, parents watching their children get married and all the little moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
I don't want your wedding photographs to simply show what happened. I want them to bring back how the day felt.
One of the most common things couples tell me before their wedding is:
“We're not very good in front of the camera.”
That's absolutely fine.
Most people aren't.
You don't need to know what to do with your hands or how to stand. When we do photographs together, I'll give you some simple direction when it's needed, but I don't want you spending your wedding day feeling as though you're on a photoshoot.
A lot of the time, the best photographs happen when you forget I'm there.
I'll photograph the things happening around you, rather than constantly stopping the day to take photographs.
And when it comes to your photographs together, I'll help you feel comfortable and keep things relaxed.
After photographing weddings for many years, I've learned that no two weddings are ever quite the same.
Some days run exactly to schedule. Others don't.
The weather changes. Someone gets stuck in traffic. The speeches take longer than expected. A ceremony starts late. Something unexpected happens.
That's all part of a wedding day.
Having experience means being able to adapt without passing that stress on to the couple.
I've photographed weddings in hotels, country houses, castles, intimate venues and beautiful outdoor locations throughout Galway and across Ireland. I've also worked in all kinds of weather and situations!
Whatever the day throws at us, I'll quietly work around it and keep looking for the photographs.
You're going to spend a lot of time with your wedding photographer.
I'll probably meet your parents, siblings, bridesmaids, groomsmen, friends and plenty of other people during the day. I'll be around while you're getting ready, during the ceremony, through the photographs and into the reception.
So I think it's important that you actually enjoy having me there.
This is something that comes up quite often in the feedback I've received from couples.
People have described me as friendly, relaxed and professional, and several couples have mentioned how comfortable they felt in front of the camera.
That's really important to me.
I don't want to be the photographer who arrives, takes over the day and disappears again.
I'd much rather become part of the day in a fairly unobtrusive way, get to know people and photograph what's happening naturally.
I'm incredibly grateful for the reviews I've received from couples over the years.
Obviously, it's lovely when someone tells you that they love their photographs. But some of the comments that mean the most to me are the ones about the experience itself – couples saying they felt comfortable, that the day was relaxed, that they had a laugh, or that they hardly noticed I was taking photographs.
Those are the things I hope to achieve at every wedding.
Dillon Photography has received numerous 5-star Google reviews from previous wedding couples, with clients regularly mentioning the quality of the photographs, the relaxed approach and the friendly service.
For me, that's far more meaningful than simply producing a gallery of technically good photographs.
I want couples to look back and think:
“We really enjoyed having Michael there.”
And, of course, I want them to love their photographs too.
Being friendly is important. Being organised is important. Making people feel comfortable is important.
But ultimately, you're hiring me because you want great photographs.
My background in professional photography and photojournalism has influenced the way I approach weddings. I'm always looking at light, composition, backgrounds, expressions and what's happening around me.
Sometimes the best photograph is something that lasts only a few seconds.
A glance between two people. A laugh during the speeches. A parent watching from the back of the room. Friends dancing together. A quiet moment between the couple when nobody else is looking.
Those are often the photographs that become favourites.
I don't really want to put couples into a particular “look”.
Every wedding is different, and every couple is different.
My aim is to create photographs that feel natural and timeless while still having a strong sense of style.
There will be beautiful portraits, family photographs and photographs of the details you've spent so much time planning.
But there will also be plenty of photographs that simply tell the story of the day.
The people.
The atmosphere.
The laughter.
The emotion.
The little things you didn't see happening.
Together, those photographs tell the story of your wedding.
I'm based in Galway and photograph weddings throughout Ireland, including Dublin and destinations across the country.
Galway and the West of Ireland are particularly special places to photograph weddings. From Connemara and the Atlantic coast to the city's hotels, country houses and historic venues, there's an incredible variety of locations and light.
But wherever your wedding takes place, my approach remains the same.
Keep things relaxed.
Photograph what's really happening.
Give you some direction when you need it.
And make sure you have a collection of photographs that brings the day back to life.
On the wedding day, it's easy to get caught up in everything that's happening.
You're surrounded by people you love, there's music, food, speeches, dancing and a hundred other things going on.
Then suddenly it's over.
Years later, it's the photographs that bring those moments back.
You'll see people who were there, remember conversations you had forgotten and notice little things that you didn't have time to see on the day.
That's one of the reasons I love wedding photography.
I'm not just photographing a wedding as it happens. I'm creating something that will become part of your family's memories.
If you're planning a wedding in Galway or elsewhere in Ireland and you're looking for a photographer with a relaxed approach, I'd love to hear from you.
Have a look through the wedding galleries on the website, read some of the reviews from previous couples and see if you like the way I photograph weddings.
If you do, get in touch and tell me a little about your plans.
There's no pressure and no hard sell – just a chance to have a chat, hear about your wedding and see if I'm available for your date.
I'd love to hear from you.
